Spray Tan Stink?

So we've all heard (or smelled) that self tanners give off this really strange, stinky scent.  Sort of like a salty pretzel, bologna, rather unpleasant smell. This is a naturally occurring reaction when the active ingredient in self tanners and spray tan DHA starts to react with the skin.  Good thing our solutions have sent neutralizers!

That's right, you won't be overwhelmingly smelly as your color is developing!  Now, there is no way to completely eliminate the scent, but our spray tan solutions are darn close! The DHA scent neutralizers sort of act like febreeze for your skin, trapping the odor and getting rid of it before you have a chance to notice it.  Pretty awesome stuff!

How Long Will My Spray Tan Last?

How long will your spray tan last?  Well that really depends on you!  On average a spray tan will last 7-10 days.  Some clients get an even longer life out of their sunless tan!  Taking all the proper steps to care for skin before and after your sunless tan will really buy you some extra tan time.

Exfoliate, exfoliate, exfoliate!  Always exfoliate and shave before you get a sunless tan.  It's just as important to wear loose fitting clothing for the 8 hours your tan is developing.  You don't want to rub away your tan!  Take cooler showers and don't scrub your skin.  And always moisturize after your shower!  The more moisturizer the better.  You lose your tan as your skin naturally sloughs off.  The more moisture your skin has, the longer it takes to come off!

What to Expect

You may be a little nervous the first time you walk in for a sunless tanning appointment.  So here's a little heads up of what to expect the first time you walk in.  Our staff is super friendly and professional, and will help guide you so that you get the best possible spray tan results!

When you come in, we will talk to you about the best solution for your skin type and what color you are trying to achieve.  We will spray you with a pH balancing prep spray, then apply barrier cream to your finger nails, toe nails, and palms.  This will help to keep spray tan solution from developing in those areas.  We will then give you a great, even full body spray tan.  The whole process will take about 20 min.  You will be dried off with warm air from the hose of the spray tanning machine.  Then you can put on your loose fitting clothing and head out!

We always have sunless tanning supplies available to help protect our clients.  These products include but are not limited to nose filters, wink ease, and disposable undergarments.

Nose filters will help prevent you from breathing in sunless tanning solutions that are over sprayed into the air.  Wink ease are great disposable eye protection that won't leave behind a tan line! If you would like, you can choose between different types of disposable undergarments to create the tan line you are looking for.

Great Homemade Body Scrub!

There are so many different ways to make homemade body scrubs!  These can really be great ways to exfolate before your sunless tanning session.  When making a body scrub yourself, or using one you purchase, be sure to stay away from oils.  Oils can leave a resudue on your skin and create a barrier between the spray tanning solution and your skin.  Here's a great homemade body scrub, that works great for sunless tanning!

This papaya scrub is so simple, and leaves your skin soft, smooth, and perfect for sunless tanning! All you need to do is take a ripe papaya, peel it, seed it, and puree it in a blender or food processor.  Add salt or sugar, whichever you prefer, until you reach your desired consistency. Rub it into your skin during your shower, the salt or sugar will rub away skin, while the enzymes in the papaya help to loosen the dead skin.

What to Wear to Your Sunless Appointment

What you want to wear to your sunless tanning appointment really is up to you.  It's all about the tan lines (or lack there of) you want, and how comfortable you are in front of your spray tanning tech.

Men typically must wear underwear, or a swim suit.  Women typically go in a bikini bottom, full bikini, or panties.  Many spray tanning places have disposable undergarments available for you to use as well.  Sunless tanning solution will wash out of most fabrics.  Be sure to bring loose fitting dark clothing to wear home.  Anything too tight fitting can rub off your tan before it has time to develop!

What to Do Before Your Sunless Appointment

So you've made your first sunless tanning appointment!  How exciting!  There are a couple things you can do at home to help ensure you get the best possible results.

Shave and exfoliate the day before your sunless tanning appointment.  Exfoliation is great for your skin the days before that as well, but its very important the day before.  You want as new of skin as possible, so that you will get a long life out of your sunless tan.  Moisturize the days before your appointment as well!  Spray tan solution works best on supple skin, so moisturizing the days before your appointment can really help!  Be sure that the day of, you do not have any moisturizers, perfumes, makeup, or deodorant on.  These products can create a barrier between your skin and the solution.

Tattoos and Spray Tan

Many people stay away from tanning in fear it will fade their tattoos.  That's one great thing about spray tanning, it won't effect your tattoos at all! You can have gorgeous glowing skin, without risk of ruining your skin whatsoever!

Spray tanning solutions may temporarily darken light colors in your tattoos.  This will go away though!  It's just the outer dead layer of your skin, and tattoos go much, much deeper.  If you do not want the temporary darkness in color, you can put a thin layer of barrier cream over your tattoo!  This will create a barrier from the spray tanning solution.

Choosing Your Shade

Will sunless tanning turn me orange?  Not if it's done right!  Sunless tanning will always have a gorgeous natural glow as long as you use the correct solution for your skin type!

Sunless tanning can look great on anyone! Spray tanning solutions come in different levels.  Low DHA levels are great for those with super fair skin, or those who just want a healthy glow.  Mid levels look gorgeous on most everyone!  High DHA levels are perfect for people who tan very well, and those who already have a darker skin tone. As long as you don't choose a solution to dark for your skin tone, you will never look orange or off colored!

How Does Spray Tanning Work?

Many think spray tanning is simply a stain or dye. That is not the case at all! Spray tanning actually causes a reaction with your skin, giving it the brown, tan color!

The ingredient in spray tanning solution that actually causes this reaction is called DHA. DHA comes from plant sugars. When applied to the skin, DHA causes the outer, dead layer of your skin to develop color. Because DHA only reacts with the outer layer, your tan fades as your skin naturally sloughs off!

Preparation for Sunless Spray Tanning

Preparation for Sunless Spray Tanning Spray Tanning Preperation: •Before your spray tanning session, make sure you shower and exfoliate 3 to 4 hours before. Do not use oil-based exfoliates. These types of exfoliates leave a residue that blocks the tanning process. Make sure your body is free of make-up, moisturizer, and perfume. •For best results, schedule waxing appointments at least a day before your spray tan. If you are unable to shower or properly exfoliate prior to your session, let your technician know. •Wear dark, loose fitting clothing if possible. If you wear light clothes you may experience "rub off" on the inside of your clothes. This is caused by the bronzer, which serves as a guide for the technician as she is applying the spray tan. The "rub off" will wash out of most materials. Wear a regular tanning outfit. •Wear flip-flops or loose sandals. No socks or boots right after tanning. •Bring lingerie, underclothes, or a bathing suit for your tanning session.
