Tips for a Lasting Spray Tan

If you take proper care of your spray tan, you can keep that glow for ten days or longer! First thing to remember is to prepare for your spray tan before you come in.  This means exfoliate!  Fresh new skin is the first step to a long lasting sunless glow.  How you take care of your skin after your spray tan can have a big effect on how long it lasts as well.

It's important to give the sunless tanning solution time to develop. It may seem like your skin is starting to look too dark, but that is just the bronzer in the solution.  Give it the full 6-12 hours to develop before hopping in the shower!  Remember to keep your skin moisturized!  The more moisture in your skin, the slower the skin will naturally slough off.  Thus keeping your sunless tan longer. You can also use a moisturizer that contains DHA every other day or so.  This will give you a little boost of color.  Most importantly, do not exfoliate again until you are ready for that spray tan to come off!

Sunless Tanning and Sunscreen

Spray tanning is a great alternative to tanning beds because you are not exposed to any harmful UV rays.  This is why it is so important to remember that your sunless tan will not protect you from the sun.  If you are going to be outside, it is best to use a sunscreen.

Sunscreen won't harm your spray tan.  It can actually help it last longer because sunscreens contain moisturizers.  It's best to apply your sunscreen 20 minuets before sun exposure. This will ensure your skin has absorbed the sunblock and that you are fully protected from the sun. Sunless Tan Extenders

Using a sunless tan extender is a great way to keep your spray tan glowing!  If you take all the proper steps to care for your sunless tan, you can get 10 days or more out of it!  Tan extenders containing DHA will add a little more color every times you use them.  Gradually building up your sunless tan!

DHA tan extenders are not the only product you can use to keep your skin bronze and beautiful!  Using a moisturizer safe for sunless tans will keep your skin moist, which will keep it from sloughing off so fast!  Take care of your sunless tan, and you can keep it for a couple weeks!

Spray Tanning with Body Piercings

If you just had your belly button, nose, ears, really anywhere pierced it's best to wait for it to heal before receiving a spray tan. Body jewelry poses no issue with sunless tanning, you just need to let it heal so that you don't run any risk for infection!

If you just got a new piercing, lets say belly button, and you just can not live without your sunless tan you do have an option.  You can use a cute shaped sticker to cover the new piercing!  You will have a tan line design over your belly button!  If your piercings are fully healed spray tanning is totally ok.  Removing your jewelry is completely up to you, but keep in mind that if you take it out later you will have a white spot!

Spray Tan with Instant Bronzer

If you are new to spray tanning, there are a couple things you should know!  Most spray tanning solutions contain an instant bronzer.  This instant bronzer acts as a guide for the spray tanning tech, and also gives you an instant boost of color!  This bronzer is not the same color as you will be when your sunless tan develops!

Depending on the type of spray tanning solution you use, your sunless tan will be at full force in 6-8 hours.  After this time you can shower.  When you shower you will notice a good amount of color going down the drain... this is just the temporary bronzer!  Once all the bronzer is rinsed away you will be left with a gorgeous, natural looking spray tan.  Your tan should last 7-10 days will proper after care!

Spray Tan Touch Up

It's common for a sunless tan to fade fastest on the hands and feet.  These areas of our body tend to be more exposed to the elements, and are washed more frequently.  As a result, you lose your spray tan color faster in these areas.  Good thing there are great sunless tanning products made specifically for this!

Touch up sprays are my favorite.  They contain your favorite spray tanning solution, in a convenient, travel size spray bottle.  Simply mist a bit of the sunless tanning spray onto a cotton ball or make up sponge and blend into your face, hands, or anywhere that needs a bronze boost!  The color will develop in a few hours, and you will have an instant sun kissed glow from the bronzers!

Spray Tan Removal.

If you need to remove your spray tan this can prove to be difficult.  Sometimes, whatever the reason may be, we just need it gone.  Here are a few tips to help you get that spray tanning solution build up off!

Try using some baby oil.  Rub baby oil in the areas you wish to remove your spray tan from.  Let it soak in then rinse in a hot bath or shower.  Lemon juice can also work the same way.  Apply lemon juice where you'd like to remove the spray tan from, and soak in a hot tub or take a hot shower.  Another great method of sunless tan removal is soaking in a hot bath with baking soda.  Put about one cup of baking soda into a hot tub of water.  Soak, and wipe away spray tanning solution with a washcloth!

Spray Tan Stink?

So we've all heard (or smelled) that self tanners give off this really strange, stinky scent.  Sort of like a salty pretzel, bologna, rather unpleasant smell. This is a naturally occurring reaction when the active ingredient in self tanners and spray tan DHA starts to react with the skin.  Good thing our solutions have sent neutralizers!

That's right, you won't be overwhelmingly smelly as your color is developing!  Now, there is no way to completely eliminate the scent, but our spray tan solutions are darn close! The DHA scent neutralizers sort of act like febreeze for your skin, trapping the odor and getting rid of it before you have a chance to notice it.  Pretty awesome stuff!

How Long Will My Spray Tan Last?

How long will your spray tan last?  Well that really depends on you!  On average a spray tan will last 7-10 days.  Some clients get an even longer life out of their sunless tan!  Taking all the proper steps to care for skin before and after your sunless tan will really buy you some extra tan time.

Exfoliate, exfoliate, exfoliate!  Always exfoliate and shave before you get a sunless tan.  It's just as important to wear loose fitting clothing for the 8 hours your tan is developing.  You don't want to rub away your tan!  Take cooler showers and don't scrub your skin.  And always moisturize after your shower!  The more moisturizer the better.  You lose your tan as your skin naturally sloughs off.  The more moisture your skin has, the longer it takes to come off!

Orange Spray Tan?

We hear so many horror stories about people turned pumpkin after a bad spray tan.  That won't happen here!  Our spray tanning techs are highly trained, and will choose the right solution for your skin tone!

What to Expect

You may be a little nervous the first time you walk in for a sunless tanning appointment.  So here's a little heads up of what to expect the first time you walk in.  Our staff is super friendly and professional, and will help guide you so that you get the best possible spray tan results!

When you come in, we will talk to you about the best solution for your skin type and what color you are trying to achieve.  We will spray you with a pH balancing prep spray, then apply barrier cream to your finger nails, toe nails, and palms.  This will help to keep spray tan solution from developing in those areas.  We will then give you a great, even full body spray tan.  The whole process will take about 20 min.  You will be dried off with warm air from the hose of the spray tanning machine.  Then you can put on your loose fitting clothing and head out!

Tattoos and Spray Tan

Many people stay away from tanning in fear it will fade their tattoos.  That's one great thing about spray tanning, it won't effect your tattoos at all! You can have gorgeous glowing skin, without risk of ruining your skin whatsoever!

Spray tanning solutions may temporarily darken light colors in your tattoos.  This will go away though!  It's just the outer dead layer of your skin, and tattoos go much, much deeper.  If you do not want the temporary darkness in color, you can put a thin layer of barrier cream over your tattoo!  This will create a barrier from the spray tanning solution.

How Does Spray Tanning Work?

Many think spray tanning is simply a stain or dye. That is not the case at all! Spray tanning actually causes a reaction with your skin, giving it the brown, tan color!

The ingredient in spray tanning solution that actually causes this reaction is called DHA. DHA comes from plant sugars. When applied to the skin, DHA causes the outer, dead layer of your skin to develop color. Because DHA only reacts with the outer layer, your tan fades as your skin naturally sloughs off!
